What inspired me to write Kaya’s Heart Song?
My character Kaya is based on a lot of what I love too, such as being in nature, allowing my imagination to colour my day, relishing that spirit of adventure and in the case of ‘Kaya’s Heart Song’, even magic and carousels!
The idea to write about a heart song came to me during my breathwork practitioner’s training course, after musing about how we all carry personal desires for our hearts; desires that make them sing with joy and fulfillment. The ones that make us feel that anything is possible and we have the gifts to make them so. I wanted to tell a children’s story about a heart song using themes that children could relate to, to show them the importance of valuing our heart’s desires as well as believing in their own magic and imagination.
Nature also inspires me because it holds so much beauty and mystery and that is why I like setting my stories in natural environments because there’s always a sense of adventure and the unexpected. I also often seek the guidance of my inner child when I plan a story. In many ways, you could say that my inner child has come alive through Kaya. When in doubt, I often ask myself, what would Kaya do?
