Q&A

Tell us something interesting about yourself:
A horse... intended to run wild and free.

How would you describe your identity?

British Indian.

Tell us your favourite medium for reading:

A physical book only. I refuse to read electronic and I haven't even tried audio yet...

Tell us your favourite location for reading:

Whenever I can, usually while at taekwondo tournaments waiting hours for my daughters as they train.

Book title:
Starlet Rivals.

What inspired your creative process in writing or illustrating your book?
I wanted readers to get a glimpse into the world of Bollywood, imagining what it is like to be a child star in this glamorous world.

Favourite character or moment from the book – and why?
I like Bela, and the way she is able to use dance to connect with her feelings while going through testing times. Dance is central to Bollywood, so this is all-important.

What themes or messages does your book raise?
Nepotism - that we need to reward real talent rather than just connections. I also talk about the highs and lows of fame, and also about social media.

How would you describe your artistic or writing style in three words?
Vibrant and heartfelt.

What aspect of the story did you most connect with, and how did it shape your illustrations?

The journey of Bela as outsider to becoming accepted, because of how she raised herself and became the bigger person in a key moment. The illustrations are a snapshot of everything adored about Bollywood - glamour, costumes, behind the scenes, hair, makeup, catwalk shows, filming, training...

Favourite illustration – and why?
Teacher as dragon… don’t ask me why :-)
