Hello everyone! We are Lantana Publishing and we would like to welcome you to our new website and blog.
This is where we will write about all of the issues that are important to us. And the issue we care the absolute most about is CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN CHILDREN’S BOOKS. Our mission is to support authors and illustrators from diverse cultural backgrounds to publish the kinds of stories they are dying to tell – books that are resonant of all places, experiences and cultures.
We are delighted to be a small, independent publishing house that can focus solely on the books we love. Click here to find out all about our NEW BOOKS! We have a plethora of fantastic authors and illustrators from all around the world busily writing and drawing away in order to bring you our first collection of diverse and multicultural picturebooks later this year, all of which are available for pre-order. WATCH THIS SPACE!
So in the meantime, here is where you will find everything we think you might like to know about our mission to create eye-opening, meaningful, entertaining, exciting and downright wonderful books that will represent children from all over the world – whether they are black, white, mixed race or any shade in between, whether they live in their birth country or have migrated elsewhere, whether they are first generation, second generation or newly arrived in a community where their skin colour marks them out as different to the rest, or whether they remain in the ancestral lands their families have called home for generations.
ALL children should see themselves in the books they read, and all deserve fantastic contemporary, well-designed books that can stand up alongside any modern picturebook on the shelves of our high street retailers.
We are not the first to champion this cause and the work that is already being done is inspirational. Publishers, reading promotion groups, libraries, schools and literacy organisations all over the world are becoming more and more vocal in their support for greater diversity in children’s publishing. We Need Diverse Books is doing wonders to rally support for increased diversity in children’s books in the US. Inclusive Minds is playing a similar role in the UK. Dedicated publishers like Tamarind Books and Lee & Low Books have always put diversity first.
We are proud to join the ranks of these long-time supporters of cultural diversity in children’s publishing. And more importantly still, we are incredibly excited to work with our authors and illustrators whose inspirational voices can champion the cause far more eloquently and persuasively than our own.
We will be updating this blog regularly over the next few months while our first books are in production, so please check back here for updates whenever you can. We can also be found on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. And if you would like to be notified when we publish a new post, please join our mailing list by entering your email address in the subscribe box to the right of this page.
To an exciting and multicoloured journey ahead!
Alice, Caroline and the Lantana team
